I have two Yamahas. One is a PSR3000 synthesiser keyboard and the other is a Yamaha Clavinova. With both of these instruments I can save my work to a memory chip or stick, and load it on to my computer, but I only do this if I want to create sound files to send to friends etc.

When doing it this way, my computer rarely crashes but often does so if I connect the instrument direct to my computer.

Having played pianos and keyboards all my life. I tend to feel that’s whilst the computer is very useful, both my keyboards are good enough as stand-alone instruments.

You will need a good microphone for starters. That could set you back a bit to be honest or you could go to a local recording studio which would sadly also cost money.
But for a program, if you have a mac then use garage band – very good.
If not on mac audacity is probably the best free program otherwise you will have to fork out some cash.
But the microphone is a must

Buy an M-Audio oxygen and use Cubase/ProTools for the PC….. And either Logic or ProTools for OSX

If you install ReWire (comes with Reason, Cubase, and others) then it will sync all of those programs.

After that, I usually freeze tracks and stick them all in Cubase.

Get yourself FL Studio. Its a great program for beginners and theres a LOT of room to grow. You can get yourself a demo vers., it wont allow you to save what you done but you can still export to WAV/MP3.

Making rmxs is a different story. You need to be able to play by ear so that you can identify the parts you wanna rmx, it might also be a mission to get just the vocal samples. There might be online resources that i dont know about.

FruityLoops is an excellent program to make beats with, its very intuitive.

Fruity loops download is free and not limited except that you can’t save songs but you can minimize the program and come back the next day and just keep doing that till you export it onto cd. Or shell out money for the real version

but fruity loops is very in depth, has everything you could possibly need, some of the samples are played out and old but who cares. The sequencer and mixer and mastering tools .

Many many programs perform the same tasks but fruity loops offers a free demo that you can download as soon as you read this and even the demo is capable of commercial quality sound if you know about mixing and mastering.

Besides having an easily accessable and free download, it also has detailed tutorials.

For pcs fruityloops is GREAT. This is the program that 9th wonder uses to make his beats and is simple enough for a beginner, while being robust enough for a professional.

For mac, you could use garageband with a midi controller. This would be pretty low tech, but very cost effective. If you have more money to spend then protools.

All the Ejays are pretty easy and have a lot to work with. A lot easier than Fl Studio and the sounds sound better. It just doesn’t have the complexities that Fl does which is for advanced users.

You already have your studio I’m sure. Now just create a DBA (doing business as) record label name, search domains online and get it registered before somebody else. Then get your doing business as forms and all set up so you can handle your transactions, checks, payments,sells (prob need a retail license to sell local if you will be selling your albums you produce..etc)

if you are taking on artists and producing the entire album, beats and all…..you will already have your business name in place..etc. Go sole proprietor.

The key here is yes, you might be rushing in with a business name..etc. And be behind on the business side (since you are going to be in school) BUT the good thing is if something happens, you start selling beats, taking on artists, songwriting…etc…your business will already be in place…..you’ll have your website, you can handle transactions under you business name, you can hand out business cards whatever..doesn’t matter if it’s just you alone.

Go for it man…what do you have to lose by just starting everything now and learn as you go. When you are done with school guess what…you can put on your resume or whatever that you were the founder of your own record label for X amount of years and you did etc,etc,etc.

Reply part II: it doesn’t take much. I run a more electronic style. DAW Reason 4 with cakewalk. Midi 25 key (prob increase later) you can get a mic and MC or have someone MC..etc,etc. Burn you cd’s and push them out the trunk (underground) like master P used to to get your label out there. All this is experience I feel.

You can get a cheap mic, a coat hanger, and some stocking to kill the pop. And lay out lyrics in a closet somewhere if you have a homie that is a rapper. Let him know you guys are trying to get on the map..etc.

I actually have an entirely different profession. I’m a network engineer (IT) and so is my friend in tampa (I’m in miami). We just do this as a hobby. It’s your profession, so you need to go harder than us basically.

Whats Ejat HIP HOP 6? Sorry about that. Im using dubturbo to create beats and mix music. Its really a good beat making software. Music output is professional and most of all its easy to use because tutorials are everywhere. You can also see it on youtube. Once you download the software along with it are tutorials and videos.
